Israeli Blood Sport

Learning about Israeli atrocities lost their novelty many moons ago, yet the certainty that the US will unconditionally support it’s protectorate in whatever action it takes has only emerged as an ugly reality to the rest of the world of late.

What we hear or see in the media may as well be a Hollywood movie with all the death and destruction that takes place on a daily basis, the divide between the entertainment and information aspects of the media certainly appear to have less distinction than do the Israelis and Palestinians.

As consumers of both, one cannot help but wonder if our conscience level moves at all when we flick from an entertainment channel to an information one. Perhaps, some of us are confused while others fail to notice.

Take the scene of the Israeli Givati brigade soldiers on a casual hike in the refugee camp that is Khan Younis accompanied by tanks, then follow the camera lens to Khalid Mahdi, a young 16-year old boy helping his father and two brothers working in their little field in the most densely populated strip of land on Earth. Barely do you blink as seven bullets pierce Khalid’s head, reducing him to a mere piece of flesh. His father Sulaiman is so helpless that all he can muster when interviewed by the media is to hope such a thing doesn’t occur again, never mind suing the Israeli army.

The above may as well be an entertainment movie as we all consume the information, have our dinner and go to bed. In fact, the more we learn of the Palestinian scourge, the less capable we appear of making any meaningful contribution in ending it.

Meanwhile, there are those that take great pain and utilise valuable resources in convincing us that the Palestinians need to behave themselves before any issue can be addressed. From the American/Israeli point of view, there always appears to be pre-conditions to the conditions that may lead to a conditional agreement for the Palestinians to reclaim a small portion of the land that has been usurped from them. This was the state of play when Arafat and Rabin were still with us while ‘Good old Bill’ played referee. The second Intefada and the ‘War on Terror’ have obviously driven the wedge that much further.

Despite all the above, as human beings we must maintain hope and be certain that shooting for mere fun (as allegedly admitted by Israeli soldiers), providing immunity from prosecution, keeping more than 300 minors in detention, giving promotions to those accused of atrocities, abusing corpses of dead Palestinians and many, many other crimes against humanity will ultimately be addressed.

Not by us despicable human beings but by the ONE who is most JUST.
